The Port Grocer
The Port Grocer, Port Medway, NS (watercolor on 100% cotton paper in sketchbook) |
On Sunday morning, during our 'staycation', hubby and I had a gorgeous brunch of the best eggs benny ever at The Port Grocer in Port Medway, Nova Scotia - one of our favourite spots. It offers amazing food made with local produce and the service is always warm and friendly. Here’s a short little video that shows the store/cafe (the cafe has since expanded since this video).
I thought it would be nice to capture the colourful building in my etchr sketchbook. I took the reference photos from a couple of weeks back; it was a very hot sunny day, with stark contrast in values. Fun to paint!
By the way, this is just a photo of the painting in my sketchbook, not a scan... so the colours and lighting are a tad off. I'll scan it in later.
How lovely!!
ReplyDeleteThank you! :) I damaged the paper in places when I removed the masking fluid with my fingers (i.e. window sills), but this paper is slightly thinner than I'm used to, approx. 95lb. versus 140lb. I think I'll avoid using frisket again in this sketchbook.
DeleteOh Bev! This is beautiful and your eye for proportion and precision with your use of light never ceases to amaze me. When will you show it to the proprietors?
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! I'm not sure when we'll get a chance to go back, as vacay is nearly over, but eventually when we do, I'll take my sketchbook along to show them.
DeleteLooking forward to hearing of their reaction (do they
Deletehave email?) :D
Haha, you're sweet Beckie! The owners are really nice ladies; one of them actually used to work at my grandparent's restaurant many years ago and she's a gem. So it'll be a pleasure to show them the picture for fun. If for some reason it doesn't fit into their giftshop, I'm ok with that too. I'm just glad I got a chance to practice painting the building; I need more practice for sure. It was a lot of fun!
DeleteHow neat one of the women knew your family. :)
DeleteIt's nice... most people around here over the age of 40 remember my grandparent's restaurant or someone in the family. It's so rural here and we're one of very few Chinese fams in the area.
